Egypt's Football Team Makes History Again - FIFA style

Egypt's latest crown title of the African Nation's cup was not the only historic milestone accomplished by the Hassan Shehata's squad. The team managed to excel 14 whole points on the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking of football teams. The bump has put Egypt at the tenth spot on the world ranking. Not only it is a first for Egypt, but it is the second time an African team has made it to the top 10 since the introduction of this ranking.

Ironically, Egypt is the only team in the top ten that will not participate at the World Cup tournament later this summer in South Africa. Egyptians, however, don't seem to mind. Egyptian fans hold the African Cup of Nations trophyEgyptian fans hold the African Cup of Nations trophyWinning a seventh African title after defeating all the teams representing Africa in the World Cup, including Algeria, seemed to have brought a long lasting joy. As one commentator put it, Egypt didn't lose the presence in the world cup, But world cup who lost the presence of Egypt !!

The FIFA World Rankings is a ranking system for men's national teams in Association football. The teams of the member nations of FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), football's world governing body, are ranked based on their game results with the most successful teams being ranked highest. The rankings were introduced in 1992, and six teams (Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy and Spain) have held the top position, of which Brazil have spent longest ranked first.

Alternative systems have been devised, such as the World Football Elo Ratings, based on the Elo rating system used in chess and Go, ranking teams on an all time basis. The UFWC (Unofficial Football World Championships) ranks teams on the number of times they have defended the Unofficial Football World Championship, an award devised solely for that purpose.
