Abdelhalim Hafez (1929-1977) (Arabic: عبدالحليم حافظ) also known simply as Halim and sometimes as Al-Andaleeb Al-Asmar is one of Egypt's four all time top artists belonging to a league that includes Oum Kolthoum, Mohammed Abdelwahab and Farid Al Atrash.
Abdelhalim Hafez sat at the top of the Egyptian music and movie industry for more than 20 years. His soft and easy listening yet strong voice registered within the hearts of millions of Egyptians and Arabs gaining him widespread success. The music portfolio of Abdelhalim Hafez included more than 100 songs all of which were considered masterpieces among his fans. Abdlehalim Hafez starred in 16 motion pictures. His last movie project Lost Between The Heaven and The Earth never made it beyond pre-production.
Although Abdelhalim Hafez never got married, rumors of a secret marriage to a famous Egyptian star have always been circulated. In his younger days, Abdelhalim Hafez was about to marry, but his fiancee died shortly before the marriage. This tragic event would come to have much influence on his art.
Abdelhalim Hafez music career did not focus on recording albums, he was mostly a live performer. That is why most of his songs are available only from live recordings. Songs that were part of his movies were recorded in a studio, however, and were later released as separate albums after this death. In very rare occasions, Abdelhalim used live radio as means for first release of his songs. The song Samra was one of these songs released to the audience via live radio. Among his most popular songs are Qareat al-Fingan (The Fortune Teller) and Ahwak (I adore you).
AbdelHalim Hafez meant to Egyptians the same as Elvis meant to Americans. His story is one of great success yet full of sadness and pain. While he died in 1977 at a the age of 48, Abdelhalim Hafez continues to entertain Egyptians and the Arab world with his legacy of timeless music.
